Growth & Prosperity Strategies?
How to grow and prosper in the truest sense of the word
I recall in my Uni days, a popular bumper sticker quoting Edward Abbey, Writer and environmental activist:
“Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell.”
The problem, as stated in a book of ancient Jewish wisdom, goes like this:
Ecclesiastes 5:11 (CJB) When the quantity of goods increases, so does the number of parasites consuming them; so the only advantage to the owner is that he gets to watch them do it.
We have all heard many times the exhortation to press ‚Äúon-wards and upwards” in our lives and in our business endeavors.
Why focus on Growth?
Having built a number of small – medium businesses over the decades,  I have arrived at the understanding that the real challenge of growth is growing from the “Inside Out”. Instead of saying “Onward and Upwards” I prefer to think in terms of growth as a process which at its heart is and inwards journey best expressed as “inward and Upwards”.
As Stephen Covey put it in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, an upwards journey without focus and purpose can result in reaching the top of the ladder only to find it is leaning against the wrong wall!
In that sense, the cancer cell gets it right every time. Growth for growths sake is a consumptive process which like its namesake, tuberculosis (traditionally referred to as consumption) feeds off the healthy cells overwhelming more and more healthy lung tissue until eventually you die.
The truth of the matter is that growth for the sake of growth is myopic, destructive and addictive.
What is true Prosperity:
Just out of interest, I Googled the word “Prosperity”. The top 10 hits look like this:
- Salary Packaging
- Property Investment
- Search Engine Optimization
- Bank accounts
- Vehicle leasing
- Gold and Copper exploration
- Social status
- Wealth and good fortune
- Successful relationships
Not that any of these things are inherently bad in themselves, but sadly, there is there a distinct possibility our obsession with self. Materialism and success is having a soporific effect on us. Has this selfish obsession with feel-good philosophies resulted in a blindness and stupor that prevents us from seeing the “wood from the trees”?
We need to dig a little bit deeper into the root meaning of the word prosperity so we don’t get misled by a superficial and trivialized understanding of the true and beautiful idea of prosperity.
The Hebrew word for Prosperity is “towb”, which has a much broader meaning than merely wealth and success. The Hebrew root word of towb means to be good, beneficial, well, pleasing, pleasant, favorable, lovely, cheerful, happy, comfortable, right and fruitful. I once heard it summed up as a “pleasant and fulfilling journey through life.”
I like that.
It is no longer all about me, but true inner peace that comes out or a life committed to giving to others rather than accumulating for self.
What does an ancient navigational aid have to do with strategy?
I have on my desk, a bronze Sextant. It is a fascinating and intriguing device, used for celestial navigation of the world’s oceans since about 1730. These days much of navigation is achieved through the use of global positioning systems commonly known as a GPS.
You may be using an ancient bronze sextant, endeavouring to get a reading or two of the angle between a heavenly body and the wildly pitching horizon. Or perhaps you are peering at an LED screen showing a precise map of your exact location based on signals from man-made satellites. Either way, your exact course and direction can only be determined by getting a firm fix
on a heavenly body of one form or another.
Another familiar proverb sums it up this way, “Where there is no guidance, a nation falls, but in an abundance of counselors, there is safety.” Proverbs 11:4
- Growth – at its best is an outward expression of inner change.
- Prosperity – Is more about what you do for others than accumulation for self
- Guidance – Without it nations fall!
